Since 2015, Kaitai-sha has been producing, over the long term, a series of works titled The Century of Céline, centered on the monstrous writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline. As one outcome of this project, translations of Céline by company member Yuichiro Morisawa were published: War (2023) and London (2026). Building on this cross-disciplinary passage from theatre to literature, the present work seeks to return once more to a theatre of body.

In 2021, the discovery that stirred global attention—and was widely covered in Japan by major outlets such as The Asahi Shimbun—brought to light Louis-Ferdinand Céline’s linked novels War and London. These two works confront the First World War head-on as writings of war, while at the same time functioning as hauntological texts that summon the ghosts of the prewar world irretrievably lost through war. Taking “debt,” “parasite,” and “mourning and melancholy” as three key concepts running through both novels, we will construct the performance accordingly. The “possessed” body that operates behind the human body which ordinarily presents itself as an acting subject - and which Kaitai-sha has long explored - and the “possessed” language through which Céline’s stylistic experiments were driven, in which every form of violence is reconfigured onto the plane of music, will together open a path toward a new “corporeal language.”
